Profile

A graduate of Environmental Engineering at Warsaw University of Technology. He has been involved in satellite remote sensing since the beginning of his professional career. He has 40 years of practical experience in satellite data processing and GIS analyses. Currently, he is Head of the Earth Observation Department at the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CBK PAN). He has led and participated in numerous scientific and applied projects related to land cover and land use, spatial planning, agriculture, and environmental protection. He specializes in satellite data classification and is the author of image and thematic classification maps. He leads the team that developed the automated S2GLC (Sentinel-2 Global Land Cover) classification method. He is Head of the Remote Sensing Section of the Committee on Space Research and Satellite Technology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (KBKiS PAN), a member of the POLSA Council, and co-leads the EuroGEO Action Group “Land Cover and Land Intelligence”. He is also the initiator of the educational initiative LEOO – Local Earth Observation Observatory.

Research area: land cover classification, use of Earth observation data for monitoring environmental crimes.
