An oceanographer specializing in marine biology, with research focused on benthic ecology, particularly hard-bottom ecosystems, habitat-forming species, and so-called ecosystem engineers. He is the founder and Chair of the Polish Committee for Scientific Diving.
Research area: comparative ecology, biodiversity hotspots and the factors controlling them, island biogeography theory, shipwrecks as artificial reefs.
